The 1st Thermopylae Forum on the theme ” Society and Culture at the Center of Regional Development ” was a complete success, held on Saturday (11/3/2023) at the Thermopylae Historical Information Center with a large participation of citizens who attended its proceedings throughout its duration.

The Forum, co-organized by the Hellenic Institute for Entrepreneurship & Sustainable Development (IEA) and LamiaReport , was of particular journalistic interest as it “brought out” important news for our region, such as the funding of the Thermopylae Historical Information Center by the Onassis Foundation , as well as the upgrading of the historical site of Thermopylae (see here everything announced by the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni).

The 1st Thermopylae Forum, which was held in the shadow of the deadly accident in Tempi, began after a minute of silence was observed in memory of the victims, while in collaboration with the Blood Donation Service of Lamia Hospital, a voluntary blood donation was also held in the adjacent room.

A special moment of the conference was the awarding of Evi Charila from Fthiotida, who amazed everyone with her performance in the Panhellenic Examinations, with the “Excellence Award”, an institution of the Thermopylae Forum, which was accompanied by a respectable amount of money (see here).

Top government ministers, members of parliament, representatives of the political, local government, business world, executives of institutions and organizations, as well as distinguished speakers, who coordinated the thematic sections of the Forum, all had a decisive contribution to its success, while at the same time laying the foundations for the next event to be held in a year, in March 2024, making the Thermopylae Forum an institution with a pan-Hellenic reach.

The thematic sections of the Forum were coordinated, contributing decisively to its success, by the Founder of the law firm “S. N. Bregiannos – G. N. Bregiannos and Associates AEDE” Sotirios Bregiannos , the CEO of STEVIA HELLAS COOP S.A. Christos Stamatis, the editor-in-chief of MAG24.gr George Papastamoulos , the editor-in-chief of LamiaReport Kyriakos Karagiannis and the President of the Hellenic Institute of Entrepreneurship & Sustainable Development (IEA) Alexandros Giannelos.

Worth mentioning was the honorary presence at the Forum’s proceedings of Fayssal Frem, of the INDEVCO Multinational Group and President of UNIPAK HELLAS, which in recent years has been making significant investments in Greece and one of the largest in our region, supporting both the economy and society.

The historical site of Thermopylae takes on a new form – VIDEO
Everything announced by the Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni at the “1st Thermopylae Forum”.

The aim of the upgrade is to modernize the technological infrastructure, improve the services provided to visitors, renew and enrich the exhibition content and digital multimedia applications for audiovisual documentation and information. The 1st Thermopylae Forum, which took place at the historical site of Thermopylae, was attended by the Minister of Finance and Member of Parliament for Fthiotida, Christos Staikouras, representing the Government and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis .
Starting his speech, the Minister of Finance referred to the fatal accident in Tempi, saying that ” Our thoughts are with the children we lost so unjustly and so prematurely, and with their families. As political leadership, we assume objective responsibility and commit to doing everything in order to eliminate the “bad things”, in order to minimize the chances of a similar tragedy happening again in the future ” (see here).

Yannis Economou’s speech at the 1st Thermopylae Forum

The Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister, Government Spokesperson and Member of Parliament for Fthiotida, Yiannis Economou , honored the 1st Thermopylae Forum with his presence .
Mr. Economou began by referring to the tragic accident in Tempi, in turn denouncing the petty politics and bribery that characterized the majority of politicians, as he admitted.
See the featured excerpt:
He recalled his book “Four Steps to a Different Politics”, reiterating the need for “a different way”.
He then referred extensively to the demographic crisis of Phthiotis, whose population decreased by 12.94%.

Read the transcript of the Deputy Minister’s speech to the Prime Minister, Government Spokesperson and Member of Parliament for Fthiotida, Yannis Economou, at the Thermopylae Forum:
It is a fact for every reasonable and calm citizen that Greece, despite the progress made in the almost two centuries since the founding of our state and our great successes, continues to be plagued by problems that could have been solved. The tragic accident in Tempe and other similar incidents in the relatively recent past demonstrate structural pathologies in the state.
These, however, did not arise on their own. They arose either from misguided actions or from the omissions and indifference of people, primarily politicians, in the narrow and broad sense.
If one looks back at the almost half century that has passed since the post-colonial era and looks at things with honesty and integrity, it becomes abundantly clear that politicians, in their vast majority, gave all their energy and interest either to grand ideologies or to small-party arrangements and bribery.
The Greek political class moved between two extremes: micropolitics, with its limited horizon and willful blindness, and megapolitics, with its horizon of utopia, without any grounding in reality. Politics, in its essence, was and is missing. And when I say politics, I mean the resolution of social and national problems, guided by the common good, the consolidation and perspective of the Homeland and the people.
A policy with know-how, knowledge of the data, pragmatism, responsibility, respect, humanity. Because politics is nothing more than solving problems and creating prospects for new generations. The unspeakable tragedy in Tempi showed us that we cannot continue with outdated perceptions and practices, with 19th century mindsets and behaviors, with petty partisanship that perpetuates misery and tortures the many for the sake of the few.
Since 2018, when I published my book, in which I presented my political perspective, I have proposed a word that has become my political compass: OTHERWISE. We cannot continue the way we are going.
It is not only a dead end, but, as it turned out, dangerous and damaging.
It is imperative that we put an end to narrow-mindedness, narrow-mindedness, petty partisanship, and every outdated political practice.
It is a demand of History and civil society that we turn the page and begin to write a new chapter in the course of Greece, but also of Phthiotis. Because if we, each of us, in our place, in our society, in our people, do not make the change we want and need, we will continue our path to the bottom. From now on, it is necessary to do otherwise: in everything. Phthiotis is an enlightening example of why change is an imperative and inescapable necessity.
In my book, “Four Steps to a Different Politics,” in 2018, I dedicated the second chapter to the demographic problem.
There I argued that Greece is faced not with a problem, but with a crisis more serious than the economic one: the demographic one.
The data that came to light from the last census show that in Fthiotida we are ultimately not facing just a demographic problem, but a demographic crisis. Specifically, the population decline in Greece reached 3.5%, while in the regional unit of Fthiotida the population decreased by 12.94%. The Municipality of Lamia decreased in population by 8,843 residents, while all the other Municipalities also showed a decrease.
As Aristotle has pointed out, even the most powerful state can be lost to oligarchy. And if for the whole of Greece the situation is worrying, for Phthiotis it is hopeless. And it is hopeless because it is experiencing the fourth largest decrease in Greece behind Grevena (16.15%), Serres (14.3%) and Evrytania (13%). Phthiotis is recording a population decrease of 9.4% above the national average and 5.2% above the average of the Central Greece region. At the same time, a structural social change is taking place.
The population of Fthiotida is aging rapidly. The percentage of younger and dynamic ages is also constantly decreasing, a fact with tragic consequences for the economic and broader course of our society. Fthiotida is declining and aging. And no one has the right to close their eyes or be complacent. Otherwise, Fthiotida, as we knew it at least those of us who went to school in Lamia until the 2000s, will be a memory.
The deviation from the national average is proof that we did not do something right. We are not talking about a prefecture that is isolated in some corner of Greek territory, cut off from national road networks, far from the sea, without access to adequate water supply infrastructure, waste management, telecommunications services or some basic deficiency that could constitute an objective justification for someone not choosing to live in Fthiotida.
On the contrary, Phthiotis is located in the center of Greece, has a road and railway network, has excellent infrastructure and wealth-producing resources, and its capital, Lamia, is the capital of the Central Greece Region. These facts make the disappointment even greater.
If we want to be honest and useful to our country, we need to not hide behind our finger regarding the causes that led us to the difficult present and the even more difficult immediate future. The truth saves and without it we will not take a single step forward. Initially, the discussion must begin with those who have held political positions, both in local government and in the central political scene in the period between the previous census and today.
Let’s evaluate the path, with an emphasis on the opportunities we missed, the potential we squandered on micromanagement and cronyism, which may have ensured the re-election of some, but did not add up to any development prospects for the place.
Let’s take a deeper look at how our demographic crisis was affected by our abandoned infrastructure (spas, PEL, etc.), the limited or zero utilization of historical monuments and landmarks (Thermopylae – Alamana – Gorgopotamos), the inability to attract investment and renew the business profile of the local market, the complete absence of an innovation system, knowledge economy or professional activities that could offer high salaries and attract people with qualifications and influence, the insufficient production of culture, the complete absence of a substantial political ferment on local issues that could lead to new ideas.
The demographic crisis is a combination, I believe, of all of the above. Governors, mayors, members of parliament, ministers, regional and municipal councilors, heads of scientific and professional associations, we must reflect – individually and collectively – on whether the priorities we had set were ultimately capable of helping Fthiotida, the place and its people. The results show that they were not. No one can hide from the facts and the numbers.
Self-criticism is the principle of approaching the problem. We need to map the situation, both in relation to the previous decade and to prefectures with a similar profile in Greece. To explain why people, especially the most dynamic ages, do not choose Fthiotida. What is important is a pan-army, so that we can reverse the situation and put Fthiotida on a development trajectory, breaking the cycle of introversion and decay. All our actions should be directed towards the common goal and not towards petty interests, which brought our prefecture to this difficult position.
With a group of my collaborators, we have already initiated contacts with experts to map the demographic crisis in Phthiotis and form a front to reverse it through sound planning and social mobilization.
Our Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, has repeatedly spoken about the demographic crisis and has already announced and introduced a series of policies and initiatives aimed at reversing the situation. Policies for housing young people, for boosting the birth rate, for facilitating parents with young children, for strengthening youth entrepreneurship, for investments that will bring jobs to young people and much more. At a time when it is literally raining measures at a national and pan-European level to address the demographic crisis, in Fthiotida we must finally close and put aside the umbrellas that some insist on keeping open, driving away opportunities and depriving our compatriots of possibilities, because they want to be in control themselves and have the baton in their hand for who will benefit and who will not.
Phthiotis is our common home. It is not anyone’s fiefdom. Our ancestors bequeathed it to us and we have a duty to hand it over to the new generation, bigger and stronger. Let us put aside what has divided us and is dividing us, let us definitively leave behind factorism and petty things. Otherwise, History will judge us very strictly. The logic and practices of yesterday have expired, collapsed with a bang and lament. We put an end to it and move forward. We move forward DIFFERENTLY, in every sector and space. For the place and the people, without exceptions and asterisks.

How bureaucracy delays the exploitation of assets

Only 9 thermal springs have a license and a certificate of good operation out of a total of over 800! The proposal to create a global Amphictyonic Village…
A very interesting discussion took place within the framework of the 1st Thermopylae Forum on the exploitation of natural resources and tourism development. The panel included the CEO of HRADF Dimitris Politis , the CEO of “Heated Springs of Greece SA”, Paschalis Bouchoris and the Member of Parliament of Phthiotis Giorgos Kotronias .
In the simple question that each of us has the right to ask regarding the non-development of important assets such as thermal springs, Mr. Politis vividly described how much bureaucracy they must overcome in order for a project to mature and reach the auction, as for example in the case of the Kamena Vourla springs, but also the incredible refusal of public services to cooperate, as happened in the case of the Platystomou Baths !

The position of Eleni Makri-Theodorou at the 1st Thermopylae Forum

Fthiotida MP Eleni Makri-Theodorou participated in the 1st Thermopylae Forum in the panel entitled “Investments in Infrastructure and Energy as Pillars of Regional Development”
Ms. Makri-Theodorou, in her statement, referred to five pillars for Regional development (Tourism and Culture, Infrastructure, Energy, Digital Upgrading, Research and Technology) emphasizing the opportunities that exist for Fthiotida.
Regarding the tourist development of the area, Ms. Makri-Theodorou raised the question of whether we are moving forward in the same axes-directions or whether alternative ways of attracting tourists and visitors should be examined by utilizing the Sperchios River, the Oiti National Park and copying successful practices such as the Pavliani Park and other villages of Fthiotida.
” Perhaps by considering another strategy we can attract the new generation that is interested in hiking trails, sports activities and generally being in contact with nature, ” he said.

In her statement, the New Democracy MP also referred to the need to connect universities and academic research with the market so that scientists do not leave abroad in search of higher salaries.
Ms. Makri-Theodorou closed by saying that “Phthiotis can become a transport and logistics hub, it can and should move towards the development of tourism and the promotion of its cultural heritage.”

Fanis Spanos for the 1st Thermopylae forum

The Regional Governor of Central Greece was one of those who donated blood at the voluntary blood donation drive, which took place alongside the Conference proceedings at the Thermopylae Innovation Museum.
Fanis Spanos delivered a speech from the podium of the 1st Thermopylae forum, co-organized on Saturday morning in Thermopylae by the Hellenic Institute of Entrepreneurship and LamiaReport.
The Governor of Central Greece stated :
” Excellent interlocutors, and the initiative to organize the 1st Thermopylae forum was also excellent, which came to further highlight this historical place, while also giving us the opportunity to talk about “Society and Culture at the Center of Regional Development”.
»We, in the Region of Central Greece, are developing our cultural wealth by restoring and highlighting our monuments, from our ancient, modern and contemporary history. But also through collaborations with contemporary culture, such as the film Triangle of Sadness, which has made Chiliadou beach a top international destination.
We also utilize the primary forces of society, with crowdfunding and crowdbranding actions, in times of need. And we also support startups and social entrepreneurship with the new NSRF.
We insist on the substitution of the terms of the title “society – culture” and “development”. Because we define and perceive Development as a means in the service of Society and Culture. And because as it has been wisely said, whatever the question, the answer is man.
“It would be remiss not to mention the commendable initiative of organizing a voluntary blood donation at the development conference, which was held in the shadow of the unprecedented national tragedy. This initiative gave us the opportunity to proceed with a different kind of crowdfunding, for something much more important than money. To collect blood, which our country so desperately needs .”

The “Excellence Award” is among the first of its kind
To Evi Charila from Fthiotida who amazed everyone with her performance in the Panhellenic Exams, the “Excellence Award” that is becoming an institution at the Thermopylae Forum. The moving offer from the well-known lawyer Sotirios Bregiannos.
The 1st Thermopylae Forum also included the institution of the “Excellence Award”. An award accompanied by the award of a medal and praise, as well as a respectable sum of money.
This year’s “Excellence Award” was given to the top of the first in the last Panhellenic Exams, Evi Harila, with her amazing performance in Mathematics (20), Chemistry (20), Physics (19.9) and Essay (19.6).
However, as Evi herself pointed out, the most important thing of all is health, referring to the Tempi tragedy. She also asked the children who did not succeed in the exams to continue their efforts to achieve the goals they set.
It is worth noting that from the next Thermopylae Forum, the institution of the “Excellence Award” is significantly strengthened in terms of the cash prize of 5,000 euros by the well-known lawyer Sotirios Bregiannos, while a greater increase in the amount is expected so that more Excellence Awardees from Phthiotis can be awarded.
