Lamia: The Moving Message of the Student Who Made It Through Extremely Difficult Circumstances – VIDEO

His determination, with which he overcame every obstacle in order to study and make his way from the small and remote island of Kalamos, Lefkada, to Lamia and the University, stands as an example to follow.

You may have heard his story on a news bulletin or through LamiaReport’s posts.

It is the story of a young man who, in order to finish high school, had to wake up before dawn on the mountainous island of Kalamos, Lefkada, so he could catch the boat and cross over to the mainland, first to attend junior high school and later senior high school in Mytikas.

In fact, during his junior high school years, he also had to take an additional bus in order to reach his school.

Despite the difficulties, the strong winds and the sailing bans, Nikolaos-Eleftherios Karampourounis (Akis to his friends) managed to succeed in the Panhellenic exams and gain admission to the Department of Computer Science with Applications in Biomedicine in Lamia. He now looks to his future with optimism, having also managed to secure a scholarship.

His message to his peers is clear: never say that what you have done is enough, because the effort to become better never truly ends.

This young man, an example of discipline in the spirit of our ancestors who “guard Thermopylae,” was the person we chose to honour at the Thermopylae Forum, in the hope that many more young men and women will follow his determination and perseverance in their own effort to become better.

The award was presented by the Vice President of the Thermopylae Forum, Sotirios Bregiannos.

Watch the video of the award presentation and the young student’s brief yet meaningful speech, with which the Thermopylae Forum 2026 came to a close.
